Kick off the Spring Season with a Hike/Paddle/Picnic at Opossum Lake

Brush off those kayaks and join SSC and the Email Riders on Saturday, May 17, for a hike and paddle day!! Mark your calendars for a day of fun! Grab your hiking boots, poles and boats and join us at Carlisle's Opossum Lake, a 59-acre lake situated on a 274-acre recreation area. There is a picnic pavilion, restrooms, a handicap accessible fishing pier, boat ramps and a floating dock.

Starting at 10:00 AM you can launch your kayak or canoe onto the lake, or take a hike on the trail around the lake.

• Boaters: Boaters will launch from our picnic spot and paddle around the lake. To be used at the lake, boats must be registered or have a valid launch permit (permits are issued by the PA Fish & Boat Commission or PA Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources).

• Hikers: The Opossum Lake loop, about 4-5 miles around the lake, is mostly flat but with some small ups and downs.
  

After the morning’s activities, everyone is encouraged to hang around for a picnic. Please bring your own food and SSC will provide grilled hot dogs with the trimmings. Following the picnic, it’s playtime again with your choice of paddling or hiking. Or just spread a blanket on the grassy field and enjoy the afternoon. Boaters will launch from our picnic spot and paddle around the lake.

DIrections from the Harrisburg area:

• Take Wertzville Rd. (944) West to McClures Gap Rd.
  Be careful, as there are a few zigs & zags & dog-leg turns

• Turn left onto McClures Gap Rd

• Turn right onto Easy Rd

• Turn right onto Opossum Lake Rd

• Go about 1 mile & turn left to the "lake"

• Park at the pavilion which has a nice outhouse

Directions from 81:

• Take exit 44 onto 465 N 3.8 miles

• Turn left onto Pa-641 W/E Main Street/Newville Rd

• Take the first right onto Meadowbrook Road.

• Turn left onto Conodoguinet Ave.

• Continue onto Meadowbrook Road

• Turn right onto Willow Grove Road

• Slight left onto Meadowbrook Road

• Turn left onto Campground Road

• Continue onto Opossum Lake Road

• Turn left into the park.

Directions from 641:

• Turn Right onto McClures Gap Rd 2.9 mi

• Turn left onto Campground Rd 4 mi

• Continue onto Opossum Lake Rd. 1 mi

• Turn left to the "lake"
